NATE When I used the last of my annual leave for the year during the month of August, I should have become adapted to not having to go to work early each morning. However, on awakening on the morning on Monday, September 1, 1986, I had a strange feeling about my upcoming change of lifestyle. In a way, it was a wonderful feeling as I could turn over in bed and go back to sleep without a penalty. Yet, I got up at my usual time at about 6 AM and I still continue to do so to the present. And of course, there is always time for a nap unless there is interference by some activity away from home.
Before retiring, I knew enough that inactivity would hasten the aging deterioration process. There would be the ususl chores at home such as caring for the lawn and outdoor plants and doing long-delayed home repairs. Another chore on my list was replacing the floor tiles in the lower level recreation room and the two bedrooms. To keep my mind active I intended to solve crossword puzzles. Now that I had a personal computer, I had installed a word processor, Word Perfect, and I had to learn how to use it. Galla and I had enrolled in the Emory Senior University in July with the tuition for both of us for the academic year was $150. Even though all the above activities would keep us busy for the coming years, we also planned to combine our photographic skills with extensive travel.
I was now in relatively good physical shape because I cared enough to maintain a proper healthy diet and I kept participating in the Emory Health Enhancement Program (EHEP). When I entered this program in 1984, it was convenient for me as the sessions took place in the late afternoons, five times a week. Eventually, the program session times were changed to the hours between 6 AM and noon. Gerald Fletcher, M.D., and his wife, a RN, were usually on the premises during their exercise sessions. Several registered nurses and physical exercise specialists were always out among the exercisers. Eventually, Dr. Fletcher left the program and Laurence Sperling, M.D., a cardiologist who was interested in preventive medicine took over the program. The EHEP was renamed the Emory Heartwise Risk Reduction Program (EHRRP). After taking part in the exercise program for over 20 years, I had to quit as I could no longer drive. I still see Dr. Sperling about every half year to check my heart function.
According to a newsletter from the Temple, a class was being scheduled for adults who wanted to undergo the bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah rite. Although I am a secular Jew, I decided to join this class because at the age of 13 I was not bar mitzvah because my mother died two days before my birthday. My class had about five women and me. The reason that the women came to this class is because the bat mitzvah rite was relatively new and not available at their age of 12 or 13 at their particular synagogue. The class met about once a week early in the evening. We learned to read the language Hebrew; in my case, it was a relearning process. Finally, in May, 1987, in each one of the members of the class were called to read a Torah portion. Standing on the bema and reading from the Torah scrolls was a moving and emotional experience for me. The Temple Sisterhood presented each member of the class with the Gates of the House, The New Union Home Prayer book. Bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs have become more than just religious ceremonies. Parents of the young 12 or 13-year-old girls and 13-year-old boys celebrate the rite with parties that can be outrageously expensive. As an adult, there was no party; I was gratified that Rachel came to the religious rite from Westborough and Jared was also present.
NATE AND GALLA The concept of Emory Senior University came from the retired Methodist minister, Reverend Sam Laird, and his wife, Mary, a former elementary school teacher. The concept was the provision of providing retired people a place for intellectual stimulation, congeniality, and sharing experiences. Mary Cobb Bugg, the Director of Community Educational Services of Emory University, was responsible for putting the concept into practice by enabling the start of the Emory Senior University in the fall of 1979. In 1980, Emory Senior University became an organization with a Board of Directors and various committees to govern its activities. At first, the student membership was small enough that they could meet in Emory University classrooms. The result of student membership increases was that for many years Emory Senior University classes were held in one church or another.
John McKenna, a former football coach, was involved in the founding of Emory Senior University. John, who was a fellow exerciser, talked to me about coming to the senior university program. Ed and Bea Caie, Temple members who we knew, were enthusiastic about Emory senior University and they suggested that we should try it. This we did and stayed with it until about 2008. There was enough talent among the senior students that some gave courses during the eight-week quarters. Others coordinated courses which featured outside speakers. I presented a course entitled, The Nuclear Age I and II, during the fall of 1987 and the spring of 1988. The course I presented consisted of the history of the concept of the atom. I also gave this course in 1996. During the summer quarter classes were held one day a week instead of the usual two days in the other three quarters. For many years the summer quarter included the presentation of travelogues. Galla and I were among those who presented one travelogue each summer. In 1998, the organization split and one group remained as members of Emory Senior University and the other group as members of Senior University of Greater Atlanta which met on the campus of Mercer University. We remained with the group that met at Mercer University. We stopped going to Senior University when I had to stop driving and we Galla did not want to take the long drive anymore from the Stone Mountain retirement community we moven into in June, 2006.
Some of our friends joined us at the now-named Senior University of Greater Atlanta and we also new friendships flourished. Names which come to mind are Bea Caine Don Anderson Margaret Child Cynthia and Bill Stephenson, Marvin and Lucille Freiser Basil and Moppy Wapinsky Ed and Ruth Schuster John Wright Dale and Caroline Barker. We played bridge quite often with Basil and Moppy Wapensky until Moppy died of pancreatic cancer.

NATE AND GALLA During the many years that we lived in the house at 1458 Sheffield Drive, we gradually made it into a home which was comfortable and much to our liking. Having adopted what had been Rachel’s room into an office for myself, just sitting at my desk and looking out of one of the rear picture windows where the large trees on the downward slope of our lot were quite inspiring. However, in the background there was the thought about the constant and costly repairs that were needed. Also, in 1987, at my age of 68 years, I became reluctant to use ladders and to maintain a leak-free skylight and fireplace chimney. After much discussion, Galla and I decided it was time to make a move to either an apartment or condominium complex. We visited Williamsburg Apartments which were from senior citizens, but it was an old project and somehow looking at the empty apartments that were available, I just could not feel that I wanted to live there. The condominium complex that appealed to me was Plantation at Lenox. We had played bridge with Frida and Bob Perlman who had an apartment in the 28000 building at Plantation at Lenox. Their apartment was appealing. On investigation, we learned that a new wing added to the 28000 building was being finished. After visiting several other condominium complexes Galla and I became serious about buying into that the Plantation at Lenox complex. On the second floor, from the elevator lobby, we turned left, walked to toward the end of the hall, and turned left again. As we walked toward the end of this short corridor, we stopped to look at apartment 28213 and 28214, both on our right. We did stop and spend some time in each apartment. Even though we liked the floor plans, we had some doubts as many of the windows overlooked the driveway from the garage below the building and heavily trafficked Lenox Road. At the end of the corridor we entered the apartment 28 215, which was on the left and a mirror image floor plan like 28214.
On entering the apartment, we were immediately struck by the back wall consisting of what appeared to be a row of doors, all with glass panels. Actually, there were two doors, each at the right and left ends of balkcony. Immediately to our right there was a powder room and then a closet for an air conditioner and furnace. On the left wall there was a coat closet.

The Pentax Espio 928 is a 35mm compact camera with autofocus and wideangle zoom made by Pentax. In the US it was known as the IQZoom 928. Even at it's widest 28mm focal length setting, the lens is very sharp and contrasty, with negligible distortion and not much vignetting.
The camera has a couple of interesting exposure modes. Pressing the button with "mountains" icon once will set the focus at infinity, which is ideal for shooting landscapes, particularly from the window of a sightseeing bus. Pressing it twice more will put the camera in "snapshot mode", with the zoom fixed at 28mm and focus at 2.9m, allowing the shutter to fire almost immediately, since the autofocus is disabled.

The teen ager dream of becoming a biochemist who would solve the mysteries of the living cell never came to fruition. It was just a dream. Althouh I graduated fro the University of California at berkeley with a B.A. in the field of biochemistry, the war years had a great ifluence on my future. As I matured, I found other interests in the fields of science. After earning my M.A. at Columbia University, where I majored in physical and organic chemistry, I did not make a great effort to continue toward a Ph.D. in the field of biochemistry. My Ph.D., earned at Purdue University, was in the field of analytical chemistry.
I had a taste of clinical chemistry and biochemical research during my time in the Hematology Department at Mount Sinai Hospital, in New York City. Drs. Harry Sobotka and Julius Carr had a great influence on my future. Because I was employed on grant money, I ended up teaching at the Rochester Institute of technology. There I found what I really liked doing. For it was by teaching , I was able to influence, and hope inspire, young people. Many years later, on meeting former students, I realized that I had succeeded in my efforts to influence them to make their dreams come true.
I maintained my membership in the AACC and this kept me in touch with the clinical chemistry community. I reluctantly left a good teaching position for fiancial reasons. I do not regret this change. I have some satisfaction in my contribution toward the establishment of standards in the area of clinical chemistry. In my work at CDC, I had the opportunity to do some teaching. All in all, although I had very few publications, I think that I was able to contribute much by workshop teaching and lecturing nationwide. At the age of 89, with handicaps that come with age, I still am interested in the advances being made in laboratory medicine.
